The Road Beneath Snow

Maximilien is moved through the mountains in winter under heavy military escort, with soldiers watching every path and ridge as the convoy pushes through the snow. Loyalist fighters track the route and wait for the right moment to strike, hiding along the cliffs and frozen trees. When the convoy reaches a narrow pass, the loyalists attack and throw the guards into confusion. Maximilien is pulled from the wagon as the fighting spreads across the road, and the rescuers try to lead him to safety through the storm. Several loyalists fall while holding off the soldiers who regroup behind them. The survivors guide Maximilien down the mountain as the wind grows stronger, the snow deepens, and Many of the rescuers die before they reach a safe place to rest.
